Research in related field

Today we watched short films that related to our media project on the UK Film Council website. We learnt many pieces of valuable information from them, such as ways to develop the story, and how to use effective camera angles in smaller areas.

One of the films we watched was Salaryman 6, which is about a day-to-day life of a salaryman in Tokyo, and how he lives the same mundane life everyday.

This is the location where the protagonist will meet his colleague. The camera angle will be a tilt shot to show the characters less power in the workplace.

The close up of the bell is to show the technology that most places of business have. This would be used for mise en scene purposes, our character will open the door using this devise.

This the location of the front entrance of the office building. This is an option that we are considering, to include this shot in our film. The entrance could be used to show the office building more closely.

This is the location of the bus stop that we will use in the beginning of our film, to show the characters journey to work. We chose this bus stop because it has a frequent bus flow, and will make it easier when shooting.

This would be the location of the office building, that the character works at. This will be the establishing shot in our film. We chose this building because it fitted the mise en scene of an office.

Chosen Idea

Idea Number 4.

We chose this idea because it is best suited to the specification and it was more relevant to current events in Britain. This idea gives us the freedom to explore different scenarios that the character may face such as his journey to work. Also the story was a better vehicle for a character development.

Unlike the other 3 stories this idea allowed us to expand and incorporate different genres of film such as comedy, drama.

New Ideas

1. A person gets fired and goes crazy and kills people.

2. A sunday league footballer that misses a goal in front of a scout and misses a chance to turn into a premier league star.

3. A foreign student comes to England on his first day of school.

4. A day in the life of a stock broker during recession.

Start to Year 13

When we came back to 6th form our group decided that our idea for a bank robbery was too complex and it does not fit the specification of our task. (Set by the examiners)

This however allows us to explore other ideas to do with British culture. Although there were many ideas that we came up with we as a collective group decided not to follow stereotypical and cliche ideas such as violence, drugs etc.

Drama Film

• In depth development of realistic characters dealing with emotional themes.
• Involves dramatic themes such as crime and corruption that put the characters in conflict with themselves.

Crime Film

• Film that involves various aspects of crime.

Convention of Crime Drama

Crime Drama - character development based on themes involving criminals, law enforcements and the legal system.

We are going to research on the conventions of crime and drama films.

Change of Bank Robbery Idea

We then decided to change the idea of the bank robbery as we felt this does not happen in Britain today and our film was supposed to be based on British life. We then changed our film into a blue collar crime and decided to rob a company instead of a bank.

Ideas For 5 Minute Films

These were brief ideas of 5 minute films :

1. Conversation between 2 people. (Drama)
2. Escape from school. (Comedy)
3. Handheld camera idea (horror)
4. Documentary.
5. Crime thriller.
6. Bank robbery plans. 

We then chose and developed idea number 6.
